Dear Blasters,
In regard of the nice data that we've collected so far and the analysis
and interpretation to come, it would be desirable to establish again a
meeting series about the physics contents. Last summer we called this
meeting "Journal Club". Focus had been the understanding and
interpretation of elastic form factors. One of the constraints was
that people were explicitly encouraged to report about a topic they were
*not* directly involved with.
However, the acceptance in turn was low as people are heavily loaded
already. I'm suggesting now a new approach: Since each graduate student
has a clearly defined thesis topic, each student is encouraged to prepare
a literature list of papers related and relevant to his thesis topic. Each
list should be made available to the collaboration until end of this year.
Now, each student should pick the paper that he thinks is most important
for his thesis, and present and discuss the content in a dedicated Journal
Club session. I assume that no one would have to start from scratch then.
I'm suggesting that we meet once a week on Wednesdays at 14:00, like we
did in summer, starting over in January (first date could be Wed
01/05/2005 14:00 if we find a volunteer, please note the collaboration
meeting on Fri 01/07, with an extended analysis meeting on 01/06).
Important to mention is that contributions to this "club" are strictly
voluntary! If you think that such a meeting series is beneficial for your
progress towards your Ph.D., then please consider to contribute! These
meetings will also be a great opportunity to train your presentation
skills. On the other hand these meetings would be very helpful for any
attending collaborators to get a closer understanding of each individual
thesis.
Please reply to me if you plan to attend and to contribute. Comments
and suggestions are welcome!
Regards,
Michael
