[BLAST_SHIFTS] Shift summary 10/03/2003 C (8-12)

Operators: manouch adrian manouch

Took run 3044-3045 with 0.1 sccm D2. L21 trip every ~7-10 minutes.
Turned all BLAST detector and WC high voltages off before accelerator studies test began at 9:00 am.

As planned, gave beam to accelerator Physics to tesd introducing timing gap in the stored beam. The idea for such a gap in beam is to reduce/remove the trapped ions in the beam to make it possible to increase the maximum stored current with reasonable lifetime. Summary of study so far:

1) the pinger test showed that it does not have enough power to resonantly kick away part of the stored beam.
2) The spin flipper RF coil has adequate power to kick the beam to destroy it. To use it for making a gap needs more hardware.

3) Test of making gap with the kicker timing did not succeed but only created bumps in the stored current (see below)

4) Shortening the polarized source laser pulse to less than 1 turn injection (normally we have two-turn injection) did not make gap in the stored beam either.

TZ et al, discovered that the gun laser is not synchronized w/ the ring turn-by-turn clock. This explains why the kicker and injector timing tests (#3 and 4) failed to produce gaps in the beam.

Still working to fix this problem.

No beam for BLAST since 9:00 am only for accelerator study, Accelerator study in progress. If it succeeds today, we may not need the 4 hours Gap tests planned for Saturday morning.
